Start with a simple telecoms audit
Before you ask anyone for a quote, write down what you have now. It takes half an hour with your latest bills and saves a lot of back-and-forth later.
- Every service you pay for: broadband, phone lines, phone system, business mobiles, mobile broadband and any numbers such as 0800 or local numbers.
- Who supplies each one, the monthly cost and when each contract ends.
- Any equipment you lease or are paying off, such as handsets, routers or a phone system.
- Devices plugged into a phone line: alarms, card machines, franking machines, lift phones or door entry.
- Where the service lets you down: slow uploads, dropped calls, poor signal indoors, or calls missed when you are out.
The January 2027 landline switch-off
Openreach says that on 31 January 2027 all traditional phone lines will be going digital. Anything that still relies on an analogue line, such as a phone system, alarm, card machine, lift phone or door entry system, needs checking with your provider before then. Openreach also says that lines not moved by then may be put on a temporary emergency voice-only service that may not support the features you use today.
The switch-off does not mean your phone number disappears. In most cases a business number can move to a digital service. Ask your current provider what they plan for your lines, and do it well before the deadline rather than in the last few weeks.
Contract terms worth reading twice
- Minimum term and notice period. Some business contracts renew automatically unless you give notice in a set window.
- Price rises. For contracts taken out since 17 January 2025, Ofcom rules mean in-contract price rises generally have to be set out in pounds and pence. The protection covers residential customers and, unless they expressly agree otherwise, microenterprise, small business and not-for-profit customers. Check which applies to your contract.
- Early termination charges, and how they are worked out.
- Equipment: whether handsets, routers or phone systems are included, leased or financed separately, and who owns them at the end.
- Who you call when something breaks, and during what hours.
Check coverage and availability for your own address
Broadband and mobile coverage can vary a lot within a few miles in Shropshire, particularly between town centres, business parks and rural premises. We do not list availability for particular streets or villages because it changes and is best checked at your exact address.
