World-class museums, beautiful parks and miles of free countryside — the best free things to do in Shropshire.
You don't need to spend a penny to have a great day out in Shropshire. Here are the best free things to do across the county.
Free museums and attractions
The Royal Air Force Museum Midlands at Cosford is the county's most visited attraction and entry is completely free — vast hangars of historic and Cold War aircraft. Community-run Whittington Castle near Oswestry is free to explore (donations welcome), and the Iron Age ramparts of Old Oswestry Hillfort are open and free year-round.
Free parks and gardens
The Quarry and its beautiful sunken Dingle gardens in Shrewsbury, the huge Telford Town Park, Cae Glas Park in Oswestry and Apley Woods nature reserve are all free to enjoy, with playgrounds and plenty of space for a picnic.
Free countryside
Shropshire's hills are open to all. Walk Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd, The Wrekin, Stiperstones, Wenlock Edge or the meres at Ellesmere for nothing (some car parks charge, so park considerately in the towns where you can). See our best walks guide.
Explore the towns for free
Simply wandering Shropshire's market towns is a pleasure: the medieval streets and riverside of Shrewsbury (pop into the free Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery), the Georgian charm of Ludlow, the High and Low Towns of Bridgnorth, and the World Heritage Ironbridge Gorge, where seeing the famous Iron Bridge itself costs nothing.
What's on
Plenty of events across Shropshire are free too — check what's on before you go.
